Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide, is actually a known metal chelater. It binds to and immobilizes specific nutrients such as zinc, manganese, iron and copper, making them completely unavailable in the body. This means that not only are the plants that are exposed to this toxin deficient in these nutrients, but once a human ingests plants that have been exposed to Roundup, these nutrients are essentially pulled out of the human body as well, causing wide spread deficiencies and defects in human metabolism. The nutrient bioavailability of genetically engineered plants is severely compromised. Micro-nutrients such as iron, manganese and zinc can be reduced by as much as 80-90% in genetically engineered plants. New studies from Germany show that people who have no direct contact with agriculture still have significant concentrations of glyphosate in their urine. It has also been found in over 90 percent of pregnant women tested and in 80% of umbilical cord blood in their babies.

Urine samples collected from non-agriculture exposed city dwellers showed ranges from 0.5 -2 nanograms per milliliter, which is 5-20 times the permissible upper limit for glyphosate. Research published in 2010 showed that the chemical causes birth defects in frogs and chicken embryos at far lower levels. Glyphosate has also been linked to the decimation of healthy intestinal flora, endocrine disruption, DNA damage, developmental and reproductive toxicity and more.

Originally, it was believed that by making plants resistant to herbicides, farmers would increase their yield and cut down on noxious weeds. But what has actually happened, rather, is that farmers all over the world are losing acreage to glyphosate resistant super weeds at an alarming rate. In the US alone, there are already 13 different weed species in 73 locations that are glyphosate resistant.

The chelation of the mineral nutrients also affects the soils. The lack of available nutrients in the soil has prevented the probiotic bacteria living in the soil to get the proper nutrients they need to flourish and grow, having a detrimental impact on soil microbes, and thus leading to the extremely common problem of dysbiosis in guts all across the world.  In addition to the effects on the soil, plenty of research now has demonstrated the suppression of cytochrome P450 enzymes and amino acid biosynthesis by the gut microbiome. So many of the detox elements necessary to rid our bodies of toxins as well as the synthesis of amino acids that get absorbed in the gut are completely suppressed, further exacerbating the problem.
