What is the glymphatic system and how does it impact our daily and long-term health? By Dr. Alison Kerns

A study published in 2013 at the University of Rochester has led to a whole new way of understanding our brain detoxification system, the importance of sleep, and our metabolic homeostasis. We now have a much more thorough, ever expanding view of how the central nervous system (CNS) and thus the brain get rid of metabolic toxins. Previously, it was believed that the cerebrospinal fluid was a sink for extracellular solutes of the CNS and brain, but it was unclear how they were removed because it was thought that the brain did not have a lymphatic system! Now, our understanding of this network of lymphatic vessels continually deepens as more and more studies are published about the glymphatic system, how it works, and why it is important.

Maiken Nedergaard, a Danish neuroscientist created the term by combining the terms “glial cells” and “lymphatic system” to form “glymphatic system”. The glial cells are non-neuronal cells in the nervous system that maintain homeostasis, provide support and structure, and make up the myelin that conducts nerve impulses, and now are known to play an integral role in the glymphatic system function. This function is to act like a lymphatic system for the CNS by removing waste and being a vital component of the immune system.

The glymphatic system is a brain-wide pathway of dural lymphatic vessels found along the blood vessels where cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and interstitial fluid (ISF) are exchanged. This exchange allows for the clearance of interstitial solutes such as proteins and metabolites from the CNS. It also facilitates brain-wide distribution of important compounds such as glucose, lipids, amino acids, growth factors, and neuromodulators while simultaneously being its site of waste elimination. The glymphatic vessels then transport this waste down through the deep cervical lymph nodes so that it can be excreted from the body.

The glymphatic system functions primarily when we are sleeping and is not engaged when we are awake. Thus, sleep allows for the removal of neurotoxic waste products, including β-amyloid (a protein aggregate found in Alzheimer patients). During sleep, there is a 60% increase in interstitial space that results in an exponential increase in convective exchange of cerebrospinal fluid with interstitial fluid and thus an increase in waste clearance. This fact suggests that perhaps sleep is restorative in part because it allows for the removal of neurotoxic waste products that have accumulated in the CNS, reducing brain inflammation and allowing our whole nervous system to work at its highest potential.

So what does this mean for you? Well, in order to allow for optimal functioning of your glymphatic system to reduce your risk of developing neurodegenerative or other neurologically related disorders, it is imperative that you get a good night’s sleep and allow your glymphatic system go to work!


SIBO and FODMAPs – What they mean and how they affect your health by Jeannie Oliver, CHC, CPT

SIBO has gotten a lot of press recently, most likely due to its increasing prevalence in recent years. SIBO stands for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, and is defined as a chronic infection of the small intestine. The most common symptoms of SIBO are very similar to that of IBS – namely gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, leaky gut, fructose malabsorption and excessive fermentation of certain carbohydrates called FODMAPs. If you’re suffering from SIBO you may also experience eczema, joint pain, headaches, asthma, depression, autoimmune disorders and a multitude of food sensitivities. According to research by Dr. Mark Pimental, 84% of people with IBS have bacterial overgrowth in their small intestine which could suggest that most people who complain of IBS symptoms also have SIBO. (Most IBS patients are FODMAP intolerant, but while consuming FODMAPs exacerbates symptoms, it doesn’t actually cause IBS.)

But wait a minute, isn’t bacteria in our gut a good thing? Yes! But only if it’s in the right place. Our bodies have about 10 times the number of bacteria as we do human cells, but the large majority of those bacteria should make their home in the colon. When too many bacteria set up shop in our small intestines they rob us of nutrients such as B12 and iron. These bacteria also deconjugate bile acids produced by the liver which prevents proper fat digestion and absorption creating problems similar to not having a gallbladder. Not only do we miss out on the benefits of fats themselves, but we also cannot absorb fat-soluble nutrients such as Omega-3 fatty acids, CoQ10, beta-carotene and vitamins A, D, E and K.  So if you’re supplementing with these and not seeing the expected improvement, SIBO could be a potential culprit. Your doctor can administer a simple breath test or an organic acid urine test to determine if you have SIBO.

SIBO can also contribute to both weight loss due to malnutrition and obesity. If the excess bacteria are consuming all the carbohydrates in your diet, you may lose too much weight accompanied by nausea, vomiting and lack of appetite. Chronic diarrhea also deprives you of the nutrients in your food because it’s moving through your body too quickly to be absorbed. Insulin resistance and elevated cortisol levels can also be a product of the stress and inflammation from SIBO, resulting in weight gain, weight loss resistance and possibly contributing to diabetes.

SIBO is often caused by dysbiosis – or an imbalance between beneficial bacteria and yeasts and harmful bacteria, yeast, and even parasites, but our diet may be the biggest cause. Bacteria thrive on the sugars and starches in the food we eat and the byproduct of this is fermentation. Aglaée Jacob, author of Digestive Health with Real Food describes the bacteria as creating “lots of microbreweries”. So just like the process of brewing beer, the more food we provide for the bacteria, the more fermentation they produce, which translates to gas and bloating. In turn that gas and bloating cause inflammation in the gut, eventually leading to the symptoms mentioned above.

Dietary Interventions for SIBO.

The trick when it comes to getting SIBO under control is similar to that of treating a candida infection – starve the bacteria without starving the person. In this case that means removing their favorite foods – sugar, starches and fermentable carbohydrates. Enter FODMAPs. FODMAPs stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols and following a low FODMAP diet has proven to be extremely effective in the treatment of IBS and SIBO.

FODMAPs are all types of carbohydrates that are not fully digested and absorbed by the GI tract and are therefore more easily fermented by the bacteria who thrive on them. As a general rule of thumb, good bacteria thrive on properly digested food while undesirable bacteria thrive on undigested foods such as FODMAPs. Proper digestion of food by stomach acid, pancreatic enzymes and enzymes found in the intestinal “brush border” breaks food down into particles small enough to be absorbed by the body. If this process doesn’t work efficiently, bacteria can easily overpopulate in the small intestine and wreak havoc on our health.

When it comes to SIBO, the importance of reducing gut inflammation, adequate stomach acid and enzyme activity cannot be overstated. Healthy intestinal cells secrete immune system antibodies, or immunoglobulins, which act as natural antibiotics to kill harmful bacteria and prevent them from colonizing the intestinal wall. If someone lacks sufficient Vitamin D, the secretion of these immunoglobulins is inhibited. Combine this with insufficient stomach acid, enzymes, bile secretions, and constipation and you have the perfect environment for bacterial overgrowth. Other important factors here are hydration and the migrating motor complex or “cleansing wave” of the intestines. This process kicks in a few hours after a meal and acts like a push broom, sweeping undigested food and bacteria from the stomach, through your small intestine into the colon. These waves only occur when the body is not digesting, so eating more often will inhibit this process and promote growth of bacteria in the small intestine. Adding insult to injury, these bacteria then produce toxic secretions that can cause long-term damage to your intestines and migrating motor complex if left untreated.

Drinking enough water throughout the day is essential for proper bowel motility and preventing constipation. You can increase and preserve your cleansing waves by staying hydrated and eating 3 meals a day, 4-5 hours apart. However, do not wait this long between meals if you have blood sugar regulation issues, are malnourished and/or underweight.

What to eat and what to avoid on a low FODMAP diet.

People with SIBO often develop intolerances to a multitude of non-FODMAP carbohydrates, and can benefit significantly from a low-starch, gluten-free, paleo type diet rich in low FODMAP vegetables, healthy fats and clean, organic protein sources. Happily this type of diet can also inhibit the growth of other pathogenic intruders such as candida and parasites.

Since legumes are one of the biggest offenders when it comes to fermentable carbohydrates, vegetarians who rely on them as a protein source will want to substitute plant-based proteins such as hemp protein powder, hemp hearts, pumpkin seed protein, spirulina and kale.

It is important to point out that while higher FODMAP foods may be problematic for those with SIBO, it does not mean that they are unhealthy. There are many wonderful and highly beneficial foods, especially vegetables that should be reincorporated into the diet once SIBO is resolved. If you do not suffer from IBS or SIBO there is no reason for you to avoid high FODMAP nutrient powerhouses such as broccoli and cauliflower unless you have specific intolerances.

On average it takes about 2 years and sometimes as long as five for SIBO to be completely corrected and for this reason many people choose to treat SIBO with a combination of diet and other treatments. Additional treatment options include antibiotics (usually refaximin and/or neomycin), herbal antibiotics (e.g. peppermint oil, grapefruit seed extract, berberine, etc.) and elemental diets (often very expensive and impractical). Talk with your doctor to determine the best option for you.

While using diet alone to treat SIBO can take much more time and effort than other treatments, some people may start to feel improvement within a few weeks. The overgrowth itself will take longer to resolve, but in the meantime people can enjoy some relief from their symptoms. Dietary treatments for SIBO should only be followed for an additional two weeks after being symptom-free, depending on the severity of the infection. It is not intended to be a permanent protocol and it can be detrimental to your healthy gut flora if followed for too long.

The goal with this diet is to reduce fermentation, inflammation and undesirable bacteria in the gut. Once those components are under control we can begin healing the gut with specific treatments and begin adding certain foods back in to promote a healthy population of beneficial flora.

Most Common High FODMAP Foods (see resources below for complete lists)

Vegetables: Artichoke, asparagus, bean sprouts, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, celery, garlic, sugar snap peas, onion, Jerusalem artichokes, potato (all colors), seaweeds, sweet potato, turnip.

Fruits: Apple, apricot, avocado, blackberry, canned fruit, cherries, cranberry, dates, grapefruit, mango, nectarine, papaya, peach, pear, persimmon, plantain, plum, prunes, watermelon.

Grains: Wheat and all gluten-containing grains, amaranth, barley, buckwheat, corn, millet, oats, quinoa, rice, rye, spelt, teff, wild rice.

Legumes: Cannellini beans, chickpeas/garbanzos, fava beans, kidney beans, navy/white beans, pinto beans, soy beans, peas.

Dairy products: All dairy products except butter, cheese aged 1+ months, dry curd cottage cheese, ghee, sour cream (homemade), yogurt (homemade).

Proteins/Meats: Bacon with sugar or corn syrup, broth made with onion or garlic, deli/processed meats.

Nuts/Seeds: Cashews, chia seed, flaxseed, hazelnuts, pistachios.

Fats: Margarine, soybean oil.

Sweeteners: Honey (sage or tupelo), maple syrup, molasses, sugar alcohols (xylitol, erythritol), stevia with inulin or other caking agent, sucralose, sugar/sucrose.

Beverages: Almond or other nut milk with thickeners, coffee substitutes, coconut milk with thickeners, fruit juice, soda, chicory tea, licorice tea, pau d’arco tea, soy milk.

Seasonings/Condiments: Asafoetida powder, balsamic vinegar, carob, chicory root, cocoa, all gums/thickeners, spices with onion & garlic, soy sauce/tamari.

Alcohol: Beer, brandy, hard cider, liqueurs/cordials, rum, sake, sherry, tequila, wine (sweet/dessert), port, sparkling wine.

Additional tips for managing or preventing SIBO

  •       Eliminate foods you are sensitive or allergic to.
  •       Omit grains, dairy and higher FODMAP foods.
  •       Take digestive enzymes and/or HCl or other digestive support.
  •       Eat 3 meals daily with 4-5 hours between each unless you are underweight or hypoglycemic.
  •       Supplement with Vitamin D if you are deficient.
  •       Manage stress.

The list of foods to enjoy and foods to avoid is too long to list in detail here, but there are many great resources for low FODMAP diets, including Dr. Allison Siebecker’s web site and these helpful charts from Aglaée Jacob and The Whole 30. There are also two great smartphone apps which you can use to look up specific foods – The Monash University Low FODMAP Diet App and the SIBO app by Dharmaworks Consulting, LLC. I find these especially handy when I’m at the grocery store or a restaurant and need to see if a food is high in FODMAPs.

Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide, is actually a known metal chelater. It binds to and immobilizes specific nutrients such as zinc, manganese, iron and copper, making them completely unavailable in the body. This means that not only are the plants that are exposed to this toxin deficient in these nutrients, but once a human ingests plants that have been exposed to Roundup, these nutrients are essentially pulled out of the human body as well, causing wide spread deficiencies and defects in human metabolism. The nutrient bioavailability of genetically engineered plants is severely compromised. Micro-nutrients such as iron, manganese and zinc can be reduced by as much as 80-90% in genetically engineered plants. New studies from Germany show that people who have no direct contact with agriculture still have significant concentrations of glyphosate in their urine. It has also been found in over 90 percent of pregnant women tested and in 80% of umbilical cord blood in their babies.

Urine samples collected from non-agriculture exposed city dwellers showed ranges from 0.5 -2 nanograms per milliliter, which is 5-20 times the permissible upper limit for glyphosate. Research published in 2010 showed that the chemical causes birth defects in frogs and chicken embryos at far lower levels. Glyphosate has also been linked to the decimation of healthy intestinal flora, endocrine disruption, DNA damage, developmental and reproductive toxicity and more.

Originally, it was believed that by making plants resistant to herbicides, farmers would increase their yield and cut down on noxious weeds. But what has actually happened, rather, is that farmers all over the world are losing acreage to glyphosate resistant super weeds at an alarming rate. In the US alone, there are already 13 different weed species in 73 locations that are glyphosate resistant.

The chelation of the mineral nutrients also affects the soils. The lack of available nutrients in the soil has prevented the probiotic bacteria living in the soil to get the proper nutrients they need to flourish and grow, having a detrimental impact on soil microbes, and thus leading to the extremely common problem of dysbiosis in guts all across the world.  In addition to the effects on the soil, plenty of research now has demonstrated the suppression of cytochrome P450 enzymes and amino acid biosynthesis by the gut microbiome. So many of the detox elements necessary to rid our bodies of toxins as well as the synthesis of amino acids that get absorbed in the gut are completely suppressed, further exacerbating the problem.

Family Constellation is a trans-generational therapeutic intervention based in family systems therapy, existential-phenomenology, and the ancestral traditions of the South African Zulus. It is a group process that has the power to shift generations of suffering, disease, and unhappiness. The founder of this work is Bert Hellinger, a German psychotherapist, former priest and missionary, psychoanalyst, body therapist, group dynamic therapist, and family therapist who studied and treated families for more than 50 years.

In his systemic therapy work Bert Hellinger discovered that the family system, just like any other system, has its own natural order and when that order is disrupted, the effects are felt by subsequent generations as the system tries to right itself. There are certain natural laws that are in place to maintain that order and permit the free flow of love between family members. In the family system each member of the family should take their appropriate and actual place, take upon their role in life, take care of themselves, and avoid intervening in other’s destiny. There are fundamental needs that exist in all of the relationships in a system- the need to belong (bonding), the need to maintain a balance of giving and taking (equilibrium), and the need for the safety of social convention and predictability (order). When there is a disruption to the natural order of the system, the destiny of one person in the family is entangled detrimentally into another family member’s life; the effects of these entanglements can be felt by subsequent generations. These effects are manifested by such things as: suicide, depression, childlessness, mental or physical illness, and addictions often without any conscious awareness of what has occurred in previous generations.

Family Constellation is an approach for revealing the hidden dynamics in a family. The actual therapeutic process happens with a facilitator in a group setting with the individuals in the group representing the different family members. People are strategically positioned into family roles, including a person in place of the client, in order to bring the family dynamic into play. The facilitator instructs the representatives to engage in a form of cohesive and independent communication to act on the emotions of each person involved that serves to represent the true nature of the family. The dysfunctional aspects of the family are thus drawn out and the family dynamic is accurately depicted. Often, this is the first time the family members recognize these family patterns and it can be extremely powerful for all members of the family and group.

Family Constellations allow us to break trans-generational patterns so that we can live healthier, happier, more fulfilled lives. In a moment of insight, a new life course can be set in motion within a family system and the results can be life changing.

The Medical Benefits of Elecampane by Dr. Dr. Nicol Giandomenico

In medical herbalism we know herbs have an affinity for certain areas of the body, and an ability to have an affect on certain body systems. Inula helenium, as it is known by its formal name, is a common herb in the Western herbal mediciary. Most herbalists are familiar with Elecampane as a lung tonic for things like cough, asthma and bronchitis. It has an affinity for the lungs and acts as a lung tonic and expectorant. What many people, and even herbalists, do not know is that it also has an affinity for the stomach and intestines, is beneficial for things like diarrhea and nausea, and has both anti-microbial as well as anti-parasitic qualities.

Inula is a genus in the Asteraceae family, with 100 species native to Europe, Asia and Africa. There are 17 species native to China, 9 of which are used as medicine.   Most commonly it was used to help prevent colic and skin problems in horses and sheep, who ate it when it grew wild in damp, shady pastures. Wild sunflower, as it was known, grew commonly in Europe and was brought to North America by immigrants.

Most commonly used to treat bronchial congestion, the leaf and flower are astringent and anti-microbial while the root is mucilaginous and a bitter tonic that is used to aid digestion. It is a cholagogue, so it aids in the expulsion of bile, an anti-parasitic, known to treat intestinal worms including hookworm, roundworm, threadworm and whipworm.

Elecampane’s ability to clear heat and transform toxins is more commonly known in Chinese medicine, and that is how we often use it in the treatment of chronic disease. In chronic disease toxins are a huge problem. A variety of pathogens are often part of the picture, whether from parasites, a scary word in medicine and often not acknowledged, bacteria, fungus or viruses, the effects of these infections over the long term can lead to a build up of biotoxins in the body. Often the effects of which include impairing the lymph, toxifying the blood, putting the body into sympathetic overdrive, leading to overall dysregulation of multiple systems in the body. The overall effects of which can be disastrous. There are several steps involved in healing from chronic illness, one of the main ones being detoxification. The main organs of detoxification include the lungs, liver and kidney. The lungs in fact, play a great role in ridding the body of waste.

In Chinese medicine, abundant lung energy manifests as strong physical vitality. In conditions of dysfunction, the lung is either weak or obstructed. Weak lung energy will manifest as low vitality and a poor immune system. Skin is often affected, appearing dull and dry, and circulation of Qi and blood is impaired. Inflammation is often a huge component of chronic illness as well, whether from chronic infection, poor lymph drainage, increased food sensitivities etc. In Chinese medicine this is referred to as the spleen, and the spleen is considered the producer of phlegm. The lung, by comparison, is considered the container.

As the container of phlegm, the lung ends up housing much of the chronic inflammation in the body. Therefore, a primary detoxifying organ becomes very quickly affected, and detoxification significantly compromised. As a primary focus in the healing of chronic disease, we try to move phlegm, improve detox, kill the pathogens and reregulate the system. By way of its anti-microbial, anti-parasitic properties, affinity for supporting and tonifying the lung ability to clear phlegm, Elecampane is a very important herb in the treatment of chronic illness.

Tonsil Interference Fields by Dr. Sarah Carnes

At SHI, we often use the term “interference field” when assessing and treating the body. Interference fields are one of the most important things that we deal with and one of the reasons that we have success with some patients whose cases that didn’t shift until they came to us.

Interference “field” can be a confusing term, as it’s a direct translation from the word used by the German physicians (Dr. Huneke) who discovered the concept, and it might be better to think of the term as interference “site,” or a site in the body where there is a problem that interferes with the functioning of the whole system.

Interference fields are based on the fact that the body is an interconnected unit, and what affects one part of it will affect another. It’s connected structurally through the fascial system  (it wraps around every muscle, every organ, every individual cell of the body, and provides a medium for communication, like when you’re wearing a sweater, or a body suit like someone on a road bike, and someone pulls on the edge of it, you don’t just feel it where they’re pulling, you feel it everywhere that the garment is on you, because it’s all one piece of cloth).


A knot of scar tissue is like balling up a piece of that clothing where you feel the tension everywhere else – and based on where the scar or knot is, you might feel it more strongly in some places than others. There are a variety of ways to address these knots – a few that we like are neural therapy (procaine injections directly into the scar, which physically break it up, as well as have other regulating effects), rolfing, and castor oil packs.

All parts of the body are also connected through the electrical system. Every cell has an electrical charge much like a battery: part of the cell (the inside) is negative and part (the outside) is positive, and the body uses a lot of energy to maintain this gradient at very specific levels, because if the difference is different than what it should be, the cell doesn’t work properly – it’s sick, which means the organ it belongs to is sick, which means the whole system is sick because everything is interconnected and interdependent on the healthy functioning of every other part.

The combined electrical systems of all the trillions of individual cells in a single human body combine to form a single bigger electrical system in the pattern of “human” – where different organs and tissues have different charges and patterns based on their functions, and all are woven naturally together into a complete and functional whole. When one of those pieces is electrically off that’s another form of interference field that affects the whole body.

The electricity of cells can be thrown off if the body doesn’t have enough nutrients (due to poor diet or poor absorption), if it’s dehydrated, if it’s stressed out, etc., including if there’s a chronic infection, as in the tonsils, sinuses, and appendix, which are prone to chronic infection. While it’s controversial to take them out, there’s a reason that it was once popular to do so, as sometimes taking out the tonsils, or otherwise addressing them, appears to completely remove severe chronic disease and functional problems. There may be a smaller interference field or issue due to the surgery, but the larger field of the chronically inflamed organ, is no longer present.

Tonsils (because this post is supposed to be about tonsils!), Dr. Klinghardt says, are the “toilet of the brain.” Any metabolic waste thrown off from the brain, head, sinuses, and teeth has to go through the tonsils to be eliminated, so they’re an area that has to deal with a lot and in some people, have been overloaded so much, for so long, that they are more a source of inflammation and interference than they are of help.

While it can be difficult to predict where in the body an interference field will cause its strongest effects – often affected are areas that have some predisposition to weakness (constitutional, hereditary, psychoemotional, karmic, history of trauma, etc.) – there are some observable patterns. When the tonsils are an interference field, the organ most commonly affected is the brain (brain fog, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, dizziness, depression, fatigue, anxiety, insomnia, and even thinning hair and balding can be a result). This is considered to be because of  proximity to an important set of structures in the nervous system: the superior cervical ganglia, which control the blood flow into and out of the brain,  basically limiting or improving its function based on their own health. If the tonsils have a chronic infection, the ganglia are affected too, and the brain suffers. Even if the tonsils have been removed, scars from the removal surgery or residual tonsillar tissue left behind (a common thing) can cause an interference field and may need to be treated.

Like with everything else, our treatments are individualized for the patient: their individual history, symptoms, and what their underlying problems are. Alpha-N-acetylgalactosaminidase, also known as nagalase, is an enzyme that is secreted by cancer cells to breakdown the extracellular matrix during tumor invasion. In addition, it is an intrinsic part of the envelope protein of certain viruses and  is also secreted by cells infected with virus. Nagalase deactivates the Gc protein which, once bound to vitamin D3, is converted to a major macrophage activating factor (MAF). By disabling MAF, nagalase prevents macrophage activation for phagocytosis and antigen presentation, leading to immune suppression.

Elevated nagalase is indicative of either tumor activity or an active viral load in the body. With suppressed macrophage activity, viruses can become highly active and create fatigue, low grade fevers, muscle aches, joint pains and continued immunosuppression. This is often an underlying cause of many chronic illnesses such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and Lyme disease.

What is GcMAF and what are the treatment options with GcMAF?

GcMAF stands for Gc protein macrophage activating factor, and is the activated form of the Gc protein once it becomes bound with vitamin D. Nagalase can only destroy the Gc protein, not GcMAF, so the introduction of an external source of GcMAF via injection has been shown to be effective. GcMAF is available in two different forms as an injection.

GOleic is the GcMAF molecule combined with oleic acid, and is understood to be more effective in that form, or is available as injection as well as under the tongue. It can also be used in a nebulizer or made into suppositories.

GcMAF is also available in a yogurt. The Bravo Probiotic Yogurt contains 42 different strains of probiotic bacteria and yeast and is specially designed to contain lactoferrins, immunoglobulins and the GcMAF immunostimulating factor. A nagalase test every 8 weeks is recommended to monitor GcMAF activity. A decrease in nagalase indicates it is working, and a healthy level is below 0.65nmol/min/mg. Your doctor may test your nagalase levels if they suspect a high viral load contributing to your symptoms, and they will also test your Vit D levels to make sure they are optimal for the GcMAF protocol. Additionally, they may prescribe other immune enhancing factors such as amino acid supplementation, immunoglobulins such as in whey protein and colostrum that enhance the body’s uptake and production of GcMAF.

The majority of WiFi uses 2.4 GHz. We measure frequency in hertz (Hz), like we measure distance in meters – so 2.4 GHz (gigahertz) tells us how big WiFi’s waves are and what waves they are similar to (Skip down to the next paragraph unless you’re interested in an intro-to-physics discussion of what 2.4 GHz means!). All electromagnetic energy, if you draw a model of it, looks like a set of waves on the ocean and is categorized on a scale of how big and how close together the waves are: the first tiny waves after a pebble is thrown into a still pond are high frequency (the waves are “frequent” or coming one right after another quickly) and low amplitude (something smaller is less “ample”), whereas immense waves on the ocean may be big enough to carry a cruise ship up and down (high amplitude/more ample), and are much further apart (low frequency – coming much more slowly) than the little waves in the pond.

2.4 GHz is the same frequency that microwaves use (yes, the ones that cook your food, boil water, and that you’re told to not stand in front of because they might damage your brain). If the microwave is sealed properly (they often are not, and we don’t condone the use of microwaves for that and many other reasons), then none of the waves can get out and they mostly only cook your food instead of you – but there are no similar protective walls around your WiFi router or your phone, so any place that your computer or phone can pick up a WiFi signal is exposed to microwave radiation.

There is an argument against what I just said, though! We don’t start boiling if we sit by a WiFi router for too long, and that’s because of the wattage; microwave ovens use many more watts of power than WiFi routers do. This is part of why WiFi and other wireless technologies have been considered safe for so long, and the only way that mainstream science knew how to measure the effects of this type of radiation was by measuring temperature increases, which WiFi doesn’t cause, so it has been assumed to be fine. Now, however, after decades of research, there are methods of measuring the non-thermal effects of WiFi on animals and the conclusions are clear: it’s extremely damaging.

The most commonly discussed mechanism of damage is through what is called oxidative stress. Oxidation is a chemistry term and it essentially means that all things have a certain amount of electrons (charged “particles,” for our purposes) that they’re happy with. When an electron gets knocked off of something by a toxin or radiation, antioxidants come in and provide a new electron, and everyone’s fine. If an electron is not provided, then that unstable atom or molecule is called a free radical, and a chain reaction begins. That is, the more oxidative stress you’re exposed to, the more antioxidants (Biopure’s Deep Purple, vitamin C, vitamin E, calamus root, glutathione, etc.) you need throughout the day in order to balance it. What happens if it’s not balanced sufficiently? Oxidative stress running rampant affects all systems negatively, increasing signs of aging and contributing to many of chronic diseases that are incurable or difficult to manage in the conventional Western medical system: neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, etc.), chronic infections, diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, cancer, stroke, heart attack, etc. It isn’t enough to take a lot of antioxidants and keep on with high levels of exposure though. WiFi radiation has other known effects, listed here:

  1. Nitrosative stress: increased inflammation, auto-immune activity, and tissue destruction due to the increased production of an enzyme called iNOS.
  1. Lipid peroxidation: a form of oxidation specific to the fats in our bodies. Fats aren’t just the fat we sometimes wish we had less of; important fat is wrapped around our nerves, and multiple sclerosis occurs when that fat is pathologically removed. Fats in the form of phospholipids make up the sensitive skin of every cell in our bodies, so lipid peroxidation affects the nerves and all cells of the body.
  1. Direct DNA damage, leading to cancerous cells and malfunctions of all kinds, because the cell’s blueprint is off.
  1. The microorganisms living in our bodies are also damaged by EMF (in fact, some specific and human-safe forms of EMF are used to weaken parasites so that antiparasitic treatments are more effective). Bacteria, fungi (molds & yeasts), and parasites living in our bodies feel the stress in their own bodies caused by EMF and respond defensively, not able to comprehend that what’s attacking them is not close enough for their biotoxins (normally used in fighting off other microorganisms and our immune system) to reach – instead, the increase in biotoxins affects us, so any pathological infection we may have becomes more virulent in the presence of EMF.

The brain is particularly susceptible to WiFi because of the high amount of fat it contains, and how much energy it uses. It already produces a lot of free radicals, through its normal use of energy (which need to be quenched), and it doesn’t have a lot of antioxidants around to do that. Any extra stress is another problem, which is part of why brain fog and other neurological symptoms are among the first to present in EMF sensitive and/or toxic patients.

It’s not just WiFi routers that are a problem, it’s also cell phones when not in airplane mode, tablets with WiFi, your computer (if the WiFi is on), baby monitors, cordless phones, cell phone towers, and “smart” meters installed by the utility company (see takebackyourpower.net if you’re unfamiliar with the smart meter).

Now imagine being in a classroom with 30 students, all with computers or tablets, and many with cell phones, it is no surprise that many students find it increasingly difficult to focus in class. Many office workers and college students have started experiencing similar difficulties focusing at work since the rise of wireless technology over the last 10 years, that they didn’t experience as a child in school.


Some solutions:

Increase antioxidant supplements and foods, but remember there is such a thing as too many antioxidants, so ask your doctor for help with this! Rosemary, propolis, L-carnitine, zinc, and other herbs and supplements have also shown to be beneficial.

Use ethernet/wired connection instead of WiFi. Most devices, if they don’t have an ethernet hookup (like the newer/thinner models of the MacBook), have a USB or other port that can be used with an adapter, like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-MB442-USB-Ethernet- Adapter/dp/B0012P26ZO. If you are unable to change your WiFi situation, at least turn the router off when not actively in use, and especially at night. It’s most important to have all routers off while in bed at night because that’s when the brain repairs itself.

Use protective fabric when unable to prevent exposure. There are a variety of other recommendations that can be made based on personal history, exposure, symptoms, and the source of the problem, so ask your doctor what else you can do to protect yourself.
